I only met Roma about 4 years ago. I was assigned as a visiting teacher at the Beehive Home in American Fork. I passed her room one day and she was struggling to fold some laundry. I stepped in to help her. We talked for several minutes and something happened right then and there--and we both knew it. We became instant friends. I visited her regularly after that even though I wasn't assigned to her. I frequently took my husband Mike with me. She always enjoyed talking with him and would always ask about him when he didn't come along. I could tell immediately that she was a teacher and a highly educated and motivated person. I helped her with her posters and her art projects. I was impressed that even in her difficult circumstances, she wanted so much to lift the spirits of the other patrons there in the Beehive Home. We talked at great length. I did laundry for her, brought her things to cheer her up....My heart ached to see her decline the way she did. The best discovery was finding out about her History book of Emery County. I've never been there but I knew my mother's people came from there. (The Killpacks and the Hitchcocks.) What a thrill to see my own grandparents and great grandparents featured in her book! We even figured out that she and I are probably related! She always said we were destined to meet each other. We just needed more time to be friends.
Several months ago I had to have a very serious emergency back surgery. I was laid up for more than 3 months. Just when I began to recover, my husband became very ill and suddenly passed away. (He was a quadriplegic with Multiple Sclerosis. I cared for him for 40 years.) I am so sorry that I had to miss visiting with Roma those many months. I know she declined even more during that time. I found out about her passing when I went to visit on Valentines Day. I hope she can somehow understand how much I truly missed seeing her and how much I cared for her. What an angel mother! She loved you all so much. May we all seek to be as filled with the love of God as Roma was.

I feel so blessed to have known Roma. It was many years ago, when I was a teacher and we worked together in the Prevention programs she made possible through her position at Emery School District. I will always have such fond memories of our fun times!

Dear Powell Family,
I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of your dear mother and my dear friend. Roma always made everyone feel like they were her "BFF. " I often marveled at how she did that. I will never forget a trip to the principals convention in the Washington DC area where she and I ended up spending most of a day together seeing the sights. I always knew your mom was a great lady because of the children she and her sweetheart gave to this world. I knew Michelle, Quinton, and Colette before I became close to Roma. You were are all such great kids that I knew Roma was special. Her talent, sense of humor, hard working ethics, and ability to handle any tricky situation with ease always amazed me. I send my sincere condolences with a hug for those who are morning this lovely lady at this time.

Mrs Powell was the best. She was my second grade teacher. I have always thought of her as my favorite teacher. She taught us how to behave, how to do our best, and how to love each other. She was the best. JYoung

What an amazing woman of spirit and heart. I was introduced to this beautiful angel as my 2nd grade teacher. She and another angel Mrs. Martinez. What a dynamic duo to brighten our minds with knowledge. I have so many magical memories of elementary school. As a child I was always drawing. All of my papers, test math sheets, you name it, had my art work on it. My teacher Mrs. Powell recognized my abilities and gave me the chance of a lifetime to sit in the back of the classroom while I worked uninterrupted on my Reflections Art Contest entires. I had never before been treated like gold. Her love and faith in me truly gave support and self empowerment to believe in myself. She loved and adored all her students and took personal interest in their gifts and talents. One of my memories of her was when she would ask us at the end of the day, weather or not we had "worked our tail feathers off" yet. Then she would turn us around and say "sure enough, they are gone!" I also remember she had nicknames for us. Another of my favorite memory was when Mrs. Powell and Mrs. Martinez would act out stories for the holidays. They always had us spell bound in their performances. Oh she had my heart as a young girl, and she will forever have my heart. I love and treasure her. 💖✨🙏✨💖

Powell family - Your mom was a wonderful friend to me. In many ways she was my second "young" mom. She so frequently used the words "I love you" to those she associated with. I was always impressed with that because I knew she was speaking from her heart. I only wish I could have given her a few more hugs before she left, but I will always remember the good times we had together. Love to you all. Beulah Oveson
