Claude E Scovill

Claude E Scovill passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family on September 6, 2014. He was born on February 8, 1922 in Orangeville, Utah to Alma Asahel and Artimissia Burnett Scovill. He was a life-long resident of Orangeville.

Claude will be remembered for his community service in Orangeville and Emery County. He was a leader in bringing telephone and television service to Emery County, and he was instrumental in starting the Jeep Posse Search and Rescue Organization where he was the first Captain. For many years he organized community Fourth-of-July celebrations, and was involved in various activities with city government. He enthusiastically participated in local and State elections as a member of the Democratic Party.

As an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Claude and his wife Jeanne served in the Illinois, Chicago Mission, followed by serving as Temple Workers in the Manti Temple for several years. He held a number of positions in his Ward, including several years as the Young Men's Adviser where he proudly referred to Priests Quorum as "his boys." He built strong relationships with those men that will live on." He was also very influential while visiting with inmates at the Emery County Jail in providing spiritual guidance.

As a young man Claude worked several years as an auto mechanic. He later became the Postmaster in Orangeville where he retired after 22 years.

A World War II Veteran, Claude participated in the liberation of Europe with the 83rd Chemical Mortar Battalion. He always considered himself a patriot, and belonged to the American Legion for 63 years where he held various leadership positions.

Claude is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jeanne Lemon Scovill, his children Claudia Strong (Rick) of Richland Hills, TX, Dennis Scovill (Nancy) of Rancho Cordova, CA, Garth Scovill (Ilise) of Parker, CO, Irene Craker of Ogden UT, Michele Sweeten (Brad) of West Bountiful, UT, 23 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Emma Jean Chitester of Carbonville, UT. Preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Amasa, Alma, Orien, Elmer, Van and sisters, Leola, Helen and Sarah.

A viewing will be held at the Heritage Funeral Home in Huntington at 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday September 9, 2014. Funeral services will be held in the Orangeville First Ward Chapel at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, September 10, 2014, with a viewing one hour prior. Interment will follow in the Orangeville City Cemetery.
